Originally called Douglas Township Sand Creek was organized in 1858. A few months later it became St Mary Township. Then in 1859 it finally settled on its current name Sand Creek. The name? A tribute to the creek that flows through it. This creek provided water power crucial for the early settlers.
Before European Americans arrived the Dakota people lived here. They thrived on this land for thousands of years. We know little of their settlements. But early settlers did mention Dakota communities along the Minnesota River bluffs. These were likely seasonal hunting villages. The land was part of the Big Woods a dense forest of oak basswood and elm. So dense early settlers described it as impassable. This made traditional farming difficult.
Early European Americans came here for the mills. Jordan a nearby community grew up because of this. The first structure a sawmill was built by William Holmes in 1853. He was the brother of Thomas Holmes the land speculator called the Father of Shakopee. A small community called St Joe emerged. Then a grist mill was built. This attracted more settlers and by 1855 the first frame house stood.
The township wasn’t always easy. There were challenges. The 2000 census tells a story. 1551 people lived here. Over 97% were white. The median income was $65370. A small percentage lived below the poverty line. The average household size was 3.01. The area boasted a rich mix of families and individuals. The median age was 37 years.
Many early settlers left their mark. W B Baudy a hired man in Indiana served in the Union army. He later settled here. Frank Matchett a journalist founded the Scott County Advocate. Eli Palmer a wagon train captain from Illinois also came and served in the Union army. Henry and Francis Eckman German immigrants built a log cabin started a farm and raised seven children. Their descendants even opened a brewery in Glencoe.
Today Sand Creek Township continues to evolve. But the story of its founding is deeply rooted in the past. The struggles and triumphs of its people the shaping of its landscape.
