San Telmo Buenos Aires’ oldest barrio. Its cobblestone streets whisper tales of centuries past. It’s a place where history and modernity intertwine. A vibrant tapestry woven with threads of colonial elegance and bohemian spirit.

Founded in 1580 by Juan de Garay San Telmo initially bordered the Zanjón de Granados a ravine and creek. Dockworkers populated this area. In the 1740s Jesuits established a church Our Lady of Belén. Later renamed San Pedro Telmo it stands as a testament to the barrio’s enduring spirit. Wealthy families built grand villas with multiple patios. The fragrant first patio was for the family. Subsequent patios served as service areas. Servants’ quarters and storage resided at the back.

The year 1871 brought tragedy. A yellow fever epidemic swept through San Telmo. Thousands died. Unsanitary conditions and overcrowding fueled the disease’s spread. Wealthy families fled to the north. Their villas transformed into conventillos overcrowded tenement houses. The Casa de los Ezeiza a prime example now houses antique stores and a café. This reflects the cyclical nature of urban change.

Despite setbacks San Telmo persevered. A planned mass demolition in 1957 thankfully failed. Conservation efforts preserve its unique identity. The Plaza Dorrego hosts a weekend antique market since 1970. Cafes and restaurants spill onto the plaza. Tango dancers whirl adding to the atmosphere.

The Mercado de San Telmo an Italianate-style market built in 1897. It’s a blend of antique shops food stalls and a trendy food court.
