Did you ever hear of a place named “among the owls”? San Sebastián Tecoloxtitlan, nestled in Iztapalapa, Mexico City, translates to just that. It’s one of the original settlements of Iztapalapa. While it may lack a grand colonial church like some of its neighbors, San Sebastián Tecoloxtitlan more than compensates with vibrant local festivals. These celebrations are a spirited echo of the area’s old haciendas, where a playful battle of mockery between the wealthy landowners and the local people seems to have played out across generations. This tradition continues today with charros parading through the streets of San Sebastián Tecoloxtitlan, their satirical performance a nod to the historical tension between the rich and the poor. You’ll see the owl motif, the namesake of San Sebastián Tecoloxtitlan, adorning the streets in various forms. The biggest festival in San Sebastián Tecoloxtitlan is the Carnival, held each March. This spectacular event features dazzling fireworks, including the famed toritos of Tultepec, mounted on frames shaped like bulls or towering high above the crowds. Religious processions, food, and dances of all kinds fill the streets, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. The ever-present charros are some of the most recognizable figures in these festivities.
