In 1294, Charles II of Anjou, ruler of the Kingdom of Naples, decided to gift a plot of land near the bustling port to the Dominican Order. This is where you find the San Pietro Martire. The Dominicans, known for their staunch support of the papacy, had become a powerful force in Naples. The church we see today, San Pietro Martire, wasn’t the one built then, though. Floods in 1343, a devastating earthquake in 1456, and even bombing raids during World War II left their marks. Yet, the San Pietro Martire stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Naples. Walk inside, and you’ll be greeted by the cool, hushed interior, a stark contrast to the lively streets outside. Look up to see the breathtaking frescoes by Giacinto Diano and Sebastiano Conca, vivid even after centuries. In the apse, Conca’s masterpiece depicts St. Dominic receiving the palm of martyrdom from Christ. Diano’s flanking frescoes, meanwhile, depict St. Thomas’s sermon and St. Catherine of Siena’s plea for the Pope’s return to Rome from Avignon. San Pietro Martire is not just a feast for the eyes. It holds the whispers of history, from the grandeur of the Aragonese court to the echoes of wartime anxieties. Before you leave, take a moment in the small courtyard. Imagine the echoes of monks’ prayers mingling with the salty air, a reminder of San Pietro Martire’s resilient spirit against the tide of time.
