Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Mexico City lies the unassuming town of San Pablo Atlazalpan. It’s a place where the echoes of history intertwine with the rhythms of modern life. San Pablo Atlazalpan rests within the municipality of Chalco, in the State of Mexico. Its name, intriguingly, translates to “Beside waterfalls,” hinting at a natural beauty that perhaps time has obscured. The heart of San Pablo Atlazalpan is its 18th-century church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Restored in 1982, this church stands as a silent witness to centuries of faith and devotion. Imagine the countless prayers whispered within its walls, the joys and sorrows shared beneath its ancient arches. San Pablo Atlazalpan’s story, however, is not just one of tranquil devotion. It’s also a story of religious discord, a clash of beliefs that once divided the town. In 1979, the arrival of a traditionalist priest sparked a conflict that split the community. His strict rules, including dress codes for women and a return to Latin Mass, alienated a portion of the parishioners. This led to the formation of two separate congregations, each claiming the name “St. Peter and St. Paul.” The division ran deep, affecting families and even halting public works due to lack of cooperation. This religious rift opened the door for other faiths, such as Evangelicalism, Pentecostalism, and Mormonism, to gain a foothold in the predominantly Catholic town. The conflict finally ended in 2004 when the main church was returned to the apostolic group by court order. Today, both groups coexist peacefully, a testament to the town’s resilience and capacity for reconciliation. Beyond its religious history, San Pablo Atlazalpan boasts a vibrant cultural life. Every June 29th, the town erupts in celebration to honor its patron saints, Peter and Paul. Another highlight is the annual Tamale Fair held in December. Here, tamale makers from all over gather to compete for the title of best tamale, filling the air with delicious aromas. San Pablo Atlazalpan, a town of just over 11,000 people, is a microcosm of Mexican history and culture. It’s a place where faith, tradition, and community spirit endure, shaping a unique identity that continues to evolve.
