Hidden high in the mountains, San Pablo Oztotepec whispers tales of resilience and revolution. San Pablo Oztotepec is one of Milpa Alta’s twelve original settlements. It’s a fascinating blend of indigenous traditions and colonial history. The name Oztotepec itself, meaning “on the hill of the caves” in Nahuatl, hints at the deep roots of this mountain town. Imagine standing here in 1483, witnessing seven Nahuatl-speaking Mexica groups conquering this territory. These groups, who had migrated from the north, overcame the people who had settled here in the 12th and 13th centuries. From this clash, towns like San Mateo, Santa Martha, Los Angeles, and Santa Cruz emerged, along with nearby Tecómitl, Ixtayopan, Tlahuac, and Tulyehualco. San Pablo Oztotepec became a cradle of Nahuatl language and culture. It remains one of the primary places in Mexico City where the language thrives. Centuries later, the echoes of revolution reverberated through these mountains. In the early 20th century, Emiliano Zapata, a key figure in the Mexican Revolution, made San Pablo Oztotepec his temporary base. His revolutionary Plan de Ayala, a cry for land reform, was ratified in the town’s La Lupita Chapel. The local headquarters of Zapata’s army stands as a testament to this pivotal moment, drawing visitors eager to connect with Mexico’s turbulent past. At the heart of San Pablo Oztotepec lies the magnificent 16th- and 17th-century San Pablo Apóstol Church and Monastery. Its imposing atrium, once a churchyard for outdoor services and mass baptisms, is enclosed by walls that still impress centuries later. Observe the church’s sober façade, featuring a semi-circular arcade that once served as an open-air chapel. Inside, discover a sculpture of Saint Paul and an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Michael. These sacred figures stand as silent witnesses to generations of worshippers who have sought solace and inspiration within these walls. San Pablo Oztotepec isn’t just a place; it’s a living story. It’s a story woven from the threads of indigenous resilience, colonial influence, and revolutionary fervor.
