Tradition says the Archangel San Miguel appeared three times to settlers here. That’s why we call this town San Miguel Ajusco. It is one of Tlalpan’s original towns. This town serves as a first stop on the way to Cumbres del Ajusco National Park.

San Miguel Ajusco has lively traditions. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word adjco. Adjco means “forest of waters”. A better translation might be “Place of flowers where the water emerges”.

The original town of Axochco was founded in 1531. After the conquest, the Archangel San Miguel appeared. He became the patron saint of the town and its church. The town church dates from 1707.

In the 20th century, parishioners built a new nave. They also added a chapel. This chapel is dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The presbytery holds an 18th-century wood carving. It depicts San Miguel.

San Miguel Ajusco is also famous for its labyrinth gardens. People also come here for the harvest of Christmas trees. The town sits about 2,900 meters above sea level. That makes it relatively cold most of the year. Summers are rainy and cool.

Many cyclists start here. They often bicycle to Cuernavaca. The old railway line is now a popular bicycle lane. It offers a scenic route.

San Miguel Ajusco celebrates two traditional feast days. Both honor San Miguel Archangel. These feasts occur on May 8 and September 29 each year. Locals celebrate with food music and dance.

San Miguel Ajusco is close to other attractions. A monument honors the Tepaneca people. This monument is nearly forgotten. San Miguel Ajusco is one of Tlalpan’s most remarkable volcano-side towns.

A monument along the bikeway gains new meaning. Cyclists heading to Morelos find inspiration here. Ajusco is one of Mexico City’s grandest national parks. It truly has something for everyone.

This Ajusco is a homey little town. It sits on the way to the park. Many consider it the most classic pueblito in Mexico City. Its charm and traditions make it special.
