Founded in 1933, the San Martín National Institute stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of General José de San Martín. The institute, dedicated to preserving and promoting the life and achievements of the Liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, offers a captivating glimpse into a pivotal era of South American history. Dr. José Pacífico Otero, a member of the Military Officers’ Association, spearheaded the institute’s creation. The date chosen, April 5th, was significant. It marked the 115th anniversary of the Battle of Maipú, a decisive victory in the Chilean War of Independence, crucial to the success of Argentina’s own struggle for liberation. The San Martín National Institute wasn’t always housed in this striking replica of San Martín’s French home. Initially, the institute operated from a different location. Upon Dr. Otero’s death in 1937, his widow, Manuela Stegmann de Otero, generously endowed the construction of a new headquarters. The building you see before you is a meticulous reproduction of San Martín’s residence in Le Grand-Bourg, France. This was where the exiled general lived from 1834 to 1848, having left Argentina due to political turmoil. The San Martín National Institute achieved particular prominence during Juan Perón’s presidency. Perón’s emphasis on San Martín’s historical importance elevated the institute’s profile. In a fitting tribute, Perón orchestrated the return of San Martín’s remains to Argentina in 1947. They now rest in a cenotaph within the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral. The San Martín National Institute extends its reach beyond Argentina’s borders. The institute coordinates numerous international affiliates. These branches, located in cities like San Salvador, Santiago, Montevideo, Cuzco, Madrid, and even Boulogne-Sur-Mer, where San Martín passed away, further solidify his global legacy. The institute’s role evolved over time. Initially, it rigorously reviewed all literature, paintings, and sculptures related to San Martín. Today, its function is primarily advisory, offering expertise on the numerous historical novels that continue to explore the enigmatic general’s life. The San Martín National Institute stands as more than just a museum. It serves as a vibrant center for scholarship and research. The Argentine Commission on Military History, established in 1993, operates under the institute’s auspices. It hosts classes and seminars on San Martín and early Argentine military history, enriching understanding of this crucial period.
