What secrets lie within the rugged volcano’s embrace? San Lorenzo Tlacoyucan is one of Milpa Alta’s original settlements. This rustic farming community holds stories of the past. It also embraces the dynamic present. People here have carved a living from these hills and valleys for centuries.
The Franciscan church here stands as a testament to time. Construction began in the 18th century. But the Church of San Lorenzo Diácono y Mártir wasn’t finished until 1896. Inside, you’ll discover two significant paintings. They date back to the 16th and 18th centuries.
The atrial wall of inverted arches surrounds a peaceful garden. The entrance portal forms a semi-circular arch. It sits in front of a Baroque façade. It also shows some Neo-classical elements. San Lorenzo Tlacoyucan offers a rewarding visit.
Don’t miss the Calvary Chapel and Lookout. It is an ancient observatory. From here, you gain a full view of the grand Milpa Alta valley.
Let me share a local legend. It was recorded in 2015. During Porfirio Díaz’s presidency, the government became interested in Milpa Alta’s forests. Railways were being built. Natural resources grew in importance.
A clever thief named Juan Carnero challenged the law. He hid stolen goods in caves within the forests. Carnero robbed travelers and coaches. He then deposited the loot into one cave. It was nicknamed “the Octopus.” The cave had maze-like tunnels. They spiraled from a central cavern. All of it was carved from solid stone.
The legend says the cave has never been found. President Don Porfirio Díaz knew a secret. Every year, on January 1st, at noon, a rooster would crow. That signaled the opening of the cave. But only for a few moments. Even the town’s residents have never found Juan Carnero’s legendary treasure.
San Lorenzo Tlacoyucan is more than just a village. It is a step back in time. It is a place where legends linger. The church stands as a reminder of faith. The story of Juan Carnero adds a touch of mystery. Take a moment to appreciate the history and beauty around you. San Lorenzo Tlacoyucan is a treasure. It is waiting to be discovered.
