Before the eruption San Guillermo Parish was twelve meters high. It featured a central nave and well-lit transept with windows. The interior boasted a main retablo side retablos and a pulpit. These were heavily gilded with gold leaves.
The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 changed everything. On September 3 1995 a lahar flow nearly swallowed San Guillermo Parish Church. This buried it up to half its height. The ground level rose by about 20 feet. Churchgoers then had to enter through what used to be the second-floor windows.
Despite the devastation the residents of Bacolor showed remarkable resilience. They united to salvage what remained of their beloved church. The original retablo and century-old statues of saints were excavated. These items were recovered from the solidified lahar. New concrete was poured on the church’s elevated floor. This effectively constructed a new church out of the buried one.
Today San Guillermo Parish Church continues to function as a place of worship. It stands as a symbol of hope for the community. The church’s unique half-buried state adds to its mystique. It attracts both pilgrims and tourists.
