A bustling marketplace. That’s how San Francisco Solano began. Not with grand buildings, but with the energy of a new community. Our story begins in 1949, not with conquistadors or colonial governors, but with land sales. The provincial government subdivided and sold plots of land. These plots became the foundation of San Francisco Solano, a city within the sprawling embrace of Greater Buenos Aires. The name, San Francisco Solano, honors the Spanish missionary who lived centuries before. This missionary, Saint Francisco Solano, dedicated his life to spreading his beliefs across South America. The city that bears his name is divided. It straddles two partidos, Quilmes and Almirante Brown. Imagine the administrative complexities! This division is more than lines on a map. It’s a shared identity, a community connected by a common place they call home. The 2001 census revealed a population of over 81,000 in San Francisco Solano. Over 53,000 resided in the Quilmes section. The remaining 28,000 called Almirante Brown home. San Francisco Solano’s birth wasn’t without controversy. The council initially decided to name the settlement after Paulino Barreiro. He was a Buenos Aires-born judge assassinated in 1840. However, fate, or perhaps marketing, intervened. The development company, Tulsa, had already printed materials with the name San Francisco Solano. So, the saint’s name prevailed. San Francisco Solano, a city born of land sales and a touch of divine intervention. It stands as a testament to the resilience and growth of Greater Buenos Aires.
