Isn’t it amazing how architecture can transport us through time? Right before your eyes stands San Francesco, the official Latin Rite Parish church of Rhodes. This beautiful church, nestled near the Athanasius Gate, has served as a spiritual haven for the Catholic community in Rhodes since its completion in 1939. San Francesco’s history is intertwined with the vision of Architect Bernabiti and the craftsmanship of Engineer Vellini, who brought it to life. The church boasts a larger than life presence, surpassing even Sancta Maria in size. This grand stature made it the natural choice for the Franciscan Mission in Rhodes to establish its parish, as it could accommodate the growing number of Catholics drawn to its doors. One of the remarkable aspects of San Francesco is its commitment to inclusivity. Every Sunday and on holidays, the church resonates with the sounds of Holy Mass, conducted in Greek. But language is no barrier here. Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, brochures with readings translated into 12 languages are provided. This thoughtful gesture ensures that every member of the congregation can fully participate in the service.
