“Hodie” he proclaims. San Expedito’s story echoes through Buenos Aires. He is the saint of urgent causes. People seek his help in desperate times.

San Expedito stands as a beacon of hope. He is especially venerated among Argentina’s poor. While many Catholics might not know him, San Expedito holds a special place here. His shrines appear in parks, stores, roadsides and homes. People trust him to act quickly. They rely on him when they need help the most.

In the Balvanera neighborhood, San Expedito is celebrated. His image resides in the parish of Nuestra Señora de Balvanera. The church is often called the sanctuary of San Expedito. Every April 19th, thousands gather to honor him. These celebrations mark the anniversary of the installation of his image in the sanctuary. The devotion is palpable.

The story began in January 2004. A priest found a dusty image of San Expedito behind the main altar. It had been hidden away. After restoration, it was shown to the public on March 19th. Since then, blessings and thanks flow to those who visit San Expedito.

Before his conversion, legend says a crow appeared. It cried, “Cras, cras, cras.” This means “tomorrow” in Latin. The crow wanted Expedito to delay his decision. But Expedito stamped on the crow. He declared, “Hodie,” meaning “today.” He would not postpone his faith. This is why he is the patron saint of urgent matters.

San Expedito was a Roman commander. He served Emperor Diocletian. After witnessing the faith of evangelizers, he converted to Christianity. In 303 AD, he was martyred for his beliefs. He died alongside other converted soldiers.

Today, San Expedito is depicted as a Roman soldier. He holds a cross that reads “Hodie.” Under his feet, he crushes a crow that reads “Cras.” He symbolizes immediate action. He embodies the triumph over delay.

The devotion to San Expedito shows something profound. It demonstrates the power of faith in the face of adversity. It shows how hope can arise even in the most urgent situations.

Middle-class Argentinians sometimes view this devotion as superstition. Yet, the poor find solace and strength in San Expedito. They share stories of answered prayers. They express gratitude for his interventions. The emotional experience at the shrine is powerful. The sight of so many people praying is reinforcing.

People come to San Expedito with many needs. They seek financial stability. They look for solutions to family problems. They offer thanks for blessings received. San Expedito embodies the intersection of faith and everyday struggles.

Remember San Expedito. He reminds us to seize the present. Act today. Do not postpone what is truly important.
