Gazing upon San Cayetano, one can almost hear the echoes of its rich history. San Cayetano is more than just a town. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of progress and community. San Cayetano owes its existence to the railroad. In 1903, Victorio de la Canal, whose estancia shared the name with the town’s patron saint, donated land for a British railway. This act set in motion the events that would lead to the town’s founding. The San Cayetano station opened its doors in 1907. A local landowner, Pedro Nolasco Carrera, saw the potential for growth and requested permission to establish a town near the station. This request was granted on March 13, 1911, marking the official birth of San Cayetano. Just six days later, the first public auction of land took place, a bustling affair led by auctioneer Ramon Tristany. The town quickly grew. By 1914, almost 130 buildings stood proudly, constructed from various materials reflecting the diverse economic backgrounds of the early settlers. San Cayetano wasn’t without its challenges. A devastating cyclone in 1919 brought tragedy and economic hardship. Yet, the community’s resilience shone through. By 1921, over one hundred businesses thrived, and a branch of the Banco de la Naci\u00f3n Argentina opened its doors. The path to autonomy was a long one. The first proposal was submitted in 1928, but it wasn’t until 1958 that San Cayetano finally achieved its independence. This hard-won autonomy is celebrated annually on October 24th. San Cayetano stands as a symbol of perseverance. It is a place where the echoes of the past blend seamlessly with the promise of the future.
