High in the Ecuadorian Andes, nestled among rugged rocks and breathtaking views, lies the small village of San Bartolo. Have you ever imagined a place where faith quite literally reaches new heights? San Bartolo sits at an elevation of over 11,000 feet. This is more than twice the elevation of Denver. The air is thin. The land is steep. The only truly flat area is a soccer field beside the school. Even then, if the ball goes out of bounds, it tumbles down a 50-foot drop. Here, the Iglesia de Cristo, meaning the Church of Christ, has found a home. San Bartolo’s story of faith began about 34 years ago with a radio program. Broadcasting from nearby Riobamba, the program spoke of being “Christians and nothing else.” The message resonated with the people of San Bartolo. Many were disillusioned with the Catholic church after a local parish controversy. Intrigued by the radio broadcast, the villagers invited a preacher from the Church of Christ to visit. He baptized 63 people. This new faith wasn’t immediately embraced. Some villagers called the converts a sect and even jailed them. Others resorted to throwing rocks. Yet, some listened. The church persevered and grew. Today, the Iglesia de Cristo in San Bartolo boasts over 110 members. The church stands as a testament to the community’s resilience and faith. The two-story building proudly displays the words, “Aquí se Reune la Iglesia de Cristo.” Services are conducted in Quechua and Spanish, reflecting the village’s rich cultural heritage. The church supports itself financially. Its minister, Juan Guaman, received training through the Honduras-based Baxter Institute. San Bartolo, once divided by religious differences, has found unity and strength in its shared faith. Families are stronger. Old vices have largely disappeared. The community no longer supports a market for alcohol or tobacco. Here in San Bartolo, the story of faith continues, echoing through the mountains, reaching new heights every day.
