The ancient stones whisper secrets. San Andres Mixquic stands before you. Its history is etched in every weathered stone. Every detail speaks volumes.

San Andres Mixquic a small community in Mexico City is far more than just a church. It is a place where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with Catholic faith. It sits on land that was once an island kingdom. This land was part of the chinampa canal system. Its history goes back centuries.

Originally called Mixquic meaning place of mesquite the name betrays a Nahuatl origin. This is one of the few English words with Nahuatl origins. The area was inhabited by various peoples. The Chichimec Chalcas and Cuitlahuacas called this place home. Later Xochimilco and then Tenochtitlan conquered this land.

The Augustinian friars Jorge de Ávila and Gerónimo de San Esteban arrived in 1536. They converted the local people to Christianity. They added San Andrés to the existing name Mixquic. Construction of the church and monastery began. It wasn’t completed until 1563. An earthquake destroyed much of it. Work restarted in 1620.

The current church is impressive. It has three large naves. The wooden door retains its original nails and brass. The altarpiece features a unique Christ figure. This figure is made from corn paste. It’s known as the Señor de las Maravillas. Its ankles knees and shoulders are articulated. Its hair is real human hair. The patron saint holds a fish. This recognizes Mixquic’s history as a fishing village.

The church’s atrium displays a figure of Mixquixtl. She is the goddess of life and death. A magnificent Chacmool sculpture is also there. Two rings from the ancient ball game are displayed as well.

The Day of the Dead celebrations in San Andres Mixquic are legendary. Thousands of visitors flock here annually. They witness a unique blend of solemn commemoration and vibrant festivities. This is a truly captivating spectacle. It’s a highlight of the Mexico City Day of the Dead.

Remember that after 10 pm on November 2nd access to the cemetery is restricted. Still the carnival-like atmosphere outside is worth experiencing. San Andres Mixquic is an unforgettable place. A place where history whispers and traditions dance. This is a place where the past and present intertwine. A place you will never forget.
