From its humble beginnings in 1957, Samuel Temple Church of God in Christ has become a pillar of faith in the heart of Chicago. The church started with seventeen children in Sunday school and only seven individuals attending the worship service. The church’s journey has been marked by the unwavering dedication of Elder Samuel Patterson, its founding pastor, and his son, Bishop Richard Patterson, who took the reins in 2001. Through their leadership, the church has seen both physical and spiritual growth. Samuel Temple moved several times, securing its own space on S. State Street in 1973. The church then embarked on a building project, leading to the dedication of a new edifice in 1991 by the late Bishop Louis H. Ford. The church’s dedication to its members is evident in its efforts to create a welcoming and loving community, offering programs and resources for all ages. A dedicated space to honor the legacy of the church’s founders and members is a testament to Samuel Temple’s deep commitment to preserving its rich history. Today, Samuel Temple is a vibrant congregation that continues to grow spiritually and serve the needs of its community.
