Opened in 1992 the Salt Lake-Moanalua Public Library stands proudly. It serves the communities of Salt Lake Moanalua Aliamanu Foster Village and nearby military housing. Before its current two-story building the library began life much smaller. It was a storefront in the Salt Lake Shopping Center back in 1984. Think of it a humble beginning for this community hub. The library walls display stunning murals. Renowned local artist Patrick Ching painted them. They depict scenes from historic Salt Lake and Moanalua. For its 20th anniversary the library threw a party. There were student dancers from Halau Na Maka o ka Laua’e. The Wai Ngai Lion Dance Association amazed everyone with acrobatics. Artist Allen Tsukamoto’s popular “Fish Doodles” program entertained the keiki. The Salt Lake Seniors played ukulele music creating a lively atmosphere. Legislators and other distinguished guests gave congratulatory messages. It was a grand celebration. A testament to the library’s deep roots in the community. The library’s 30th anniversary was equally impressive. A kung fu demonstration and a lion dance heralded another successful 30 years. Magician James Lee performed. Library staff and legislators spoke. Refreshments including cookies and ice cream were served in the Magazine Room.
