The history of Salem United Church of Christ is intertwined with the city’s German heritage. Standing before you is a testament to faith and resilience. Salem United Church of Christ has been a beacon of hope in Chicago since 1848. The first meeting took place on Easter Sunday of that year, led by the Rev. Christoph Jung. He was working on behalf of the German mission society. They met in a building on Clark Street in Chicago. In 1877, the church moved to its present location on the northwest corner of 9th and State. It has been renovated several times over the years, enhancing both its interior and exterior. It is a historic landmark in Quincy’s German Historical District. The church is part of the United Church of Christ denomination, which is a product of the merger of four faith traditions. The UCC is among the most diverse Christian churches in the United States. Salem recognizes two sacraments: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper. Through baptism, persons are joined in faith with Jesus and accepted into the fellowship of the Christian community. The Lord’s Supper of Communion celebrates the remembrance of Christ’s death and resurrection. The church is a place where even though we are not perfect and have sinned, Christ’s grace is extended to all. Salem, a symbol of faith and community, continues to welcome all who seek solace and fellowship in Chicago today.
