Peace. That’s what Salem means. Salem Lutheran Church stands before you a testament to faith and resilience. Founded in 1892 by Reverend Dreher from Emmanuel the church initially held services in a local store.
Imagine the early pioneers. They purchased land on South Robert Street and Bunker. Charter members like H F Lange John Kulenkamp and others joined Reverend Dreher. They built their first church in 1894 Gustave Semmler was the contractor.
The congregation’s history is a tapestry woven with threads of language and adaptation. Early services were in German reflecting the heritage of many members. But times changed. The need for English services grew leading to the establishment of an “English Mission”.
Eventually in 1932 the two congregations merged. English became the official language. The old St Paul Courthouse was demolished. Salem Lutheran Church repurposed its valuable Kasota marble cornice stones for a future building project. That’s resourcefulness.
Through renovations expansions and changes of pastors the church persevered. The congregation built a new church in 1938. The old church continued to serve for many years. A full basement was added and renovations were completed. In 1953 the new building was dedicated. A magnificent altar depicting the Last Supper was installed.
The story of Salem Lutheran Church isn’t just about buildings. It is about community. It’s about women gaining equal status in 1915. It is about sponsoring refugee families in the 1970s and 1980s. It’s about adapting to changing needs and welcoming everyone.
From humble beginnings in a small store to its current standing Salem Lutheran Church has witnessed history. It has seen growth challenges and unwavering faith. This church remains a beacon of peace and hope in Austin Texas a place where stories continue to unfold. A place of worship. A testament to enduring faith. This is Salem Lutheran Church.
