How many stories can a building tell? Salem Baptist Church has quite a tale. Founded in 1985, Salem Baptist Church started with a vision from James Meeks. He was then the pastor of Beth Eden Baptist Church. He shared his idea in a sermon. That same day 205 members met and Salem Baptist Church was born.

The first services occurred on January 20 1985. The location was 8201 South Jeffrey Boulevard. The congregation stayed there for five years. By 2004, Salem Baptist Church had grown to 17000 members. It became one of the fastest-growing megachurches in the United States. Salem is also the largest African American church in Illinois. It boasts over 15000 members.

James Meeks didn’t just preach. He took action. In 1998 he led a rally. The goal was to “dry up” the Roseland community. This resulted in 26 liquor stores closing. He gave out 30000 Bibles to residents. These residents lived in the church’s zip code. Every prisoner in the state received a Bible on cassette.

In 2005 Salem Baptist Church dedicated the House of Hope. This new building included a 10000-seat auditorium. The usable space covers 203000 square feet. It became the largest facility built from the ground up as a worship venue in the United States. The House of Hope cost 50 million dollars.

Meeks served as Illinois State Senator beginning in 2002. He was the first Independent legislator elected to the Illinois Senate. His focus was on educational equity. Meeks chaired the Education committee. He was also the joint chairman of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus. Today Meeks serves as Chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education.

After 38 years of service Pastor Meeks retired on January 8 2023. Charlie Dates succeeded him as senior pastor. Dates preached his first sermon at age 17. He served in campus ministry at Illinois. Dates was also an apprentice pastor at New Zion Baptist Church. This was under Reverend Dr. K. Edward Copeland. He also served in pastoral ministry at Salem Baptist Church with Pastor James T. Meeks.

Salem Baptist Church has a clear mission. That mission is restoring hope by connecting people to God and each other. The church’s vision includes being multi-generational. They focus on God’s love. They encourage personal growth. Salem Baptist Church wants to establish healthy family relationships.

Rev. Meeks is also the President and CEO of the Hope Center Foundation. Throughout his life Meeks has served the people. He did it through legislation. He did it through community organizing. He did it from the pulpit. Meeks has taken his message of hope around the world. His travels include Israel Africa China Jamaica Argentina Sweden and Australia.
