“A public art salon” That’s what David Alfaro Siqueiros called this place. The Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros. Not a museum. Too institutional he thought. He wanted something more alive more engaging.

This building in Mexico City’s Polanco neighborhood holds a special place in art history. It’s more than just a gallery. It’s a legacy. Siqueiros’s legacy. He built it in 1958. He lived here briefly. He was imprisoned in 1964. He moved to Cuernavaca in 1965. Then in 1969 he opened this space. A space dedicated to public art.

Siqueiros believed art should have a social function. A political commitment. This building reflects that belief. He made extensive modifications. He wanted to further the Mexican Muralist movement’s theory and practice. He donated the building in 1973. Just 25 days before his death in 1974. What a gift. He left behind more than bricks and mortar.

He also donated his collection. Paintings sketches engravings. A huge photographic and documentary archive. A vast library. All part of his vision. A vision of art as a catalyst for social change.

The Sala operated as a vibrant arts center. It thrived until the mid-1980s. But then things declined. By 1989 it was in serious trouble. The National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature INBAL stepped in. They took over responsibility for both the Polanco location and La Tallera in Cuernavaca.

Today the Sala de Arte Público Siqueiros is a lively hub. It hosts lectures panel discussions. It connects Siqueiros’s work to contemporary art. It continues his mission of public art. A space for dialogue. A space for engagement. A space for change. And it’s all thanks to Siqueiros’s incredible vision and his generous gift to the people of Mexico. A true testament to his enduring artistic spirit.
