What if I told you this church was once a world away from its current location? The story of Saints Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church begins not in Burr Ridge, but in the heart of Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood. In 1931, Reverend Peter Semkoff began the journey to establish a new parish, one that would cater to the growing Carpatho-Russian community. Their first church was a testament to their faith, built brick by brick on the corner of Western Avenue and 53rd Street. The first service, held on Palm Sunday in 1932, resonated with the hopes and dreams of these immigrants seeking a spiritual home. For over 50 years, Saints Peter & Paul thrived under the guidance of Reverend Semkoff and later, his son Nicholas. But as the years passed and the congregation’s demographics shifted, a decision was made. In 1998, the church found its new home here in Burr Ridge, a testament to the ever-changing landscape of faith and community. The spirit of those early pioneers, however, lives on within these walls, a reminder that faith, like this church, can find new life and meaning wherever it takes root.
