Did Captain Pedro de Brito ever imagine his 1608 land donation would birth the majestic Saints Peter and Paul Parish Church? Here we stand before this iconic Makati landmark, also affectionately known as San Pedro Macati Church or simply Makati Church. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the rich tapestry of Makati’s history. A beacon that has witnessed centuries of change. The original church, completed in 1620 under Pedro de los Montes, was a vision brought to life by Jesuit prosperity. Funded by the thriving earthenware production of the encomienda, it was built on the highest hill, Buenavista. A fitting location for a church dedicated to Saint Peter, Captain de Brito’s namesake. Saints Peter and Paul Parish Church has known both triumph and tragedy. In 1718, a precious ivory image of the Virgen de la Rosa, complete with a relic of the Virgin’s hair, arrived from Mexico. It became a focal point of veneration. Sadly, both the relic and the ivory pieces of the statue vanished during the 1899 Revolution, leaving a void that whispers of lost treasures. The church itself was destroyed during the British occupation in 1762 but rose again in 1849. This resilient structure, built with stones from Guadalupe and Meycauayan, stands as a symbol of Makati’s enduring spirit. The church played a crucial role in the Philippine-American War, serving as a hospital for wounded American soldiers. The grounds even became a temporary campsite, marking another chapter in its long history. Following Vatican II, Saint Paul was added as a titular, solidifying the church’s name as Saints Peter and Paul Parish Church. In 2015, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle rededicated this enduring symbol of faith, cementing its place in Makati’s heart. And in 2023, the National Museum of the Philippines recognized its significance, designating it an Important Cultural Property. Today, Saints Peter and Paul Parish Church continues to serve its community, a steadfast presence in the ever-evolving landscape of Makati. Its walls echo with stories, inviting us to reflect on the enduring power of faith and the fascinating history of this vibrant city.
