Closed in 1990 Saints Cyril and Methodius Church stands as a poignant reminder of Chicago’s rich Bohemian heritage. Its story is one of vibrant community and eventual decline.

Imagine a bustling Bohemian neighborhood in 1913. Saints Cyril and Methodius Church opened its doors. It served a thriving community of Czech immigrants. This beautiful Renaissance Revival style church was built with stone and marble. Architect Joseph Molitor a Bohemian-American designed it.

For decades Saints Cyril and Methodius was a central hub. Five masses were held each weekend. The church held approximately 900 families. But times changed. By 1990 only 150 families remained. Weekend masses were reduced to two. The collection barely covered the church’s $2000 monthly utility bills.

Archdiocesan budget cuts forced a difficult decision. The church closed on June 30 1990. Reverend Charles J. Kouba the long-time pastor announced the closure. He had served the parish for nearly two decades. The closure was part of a controversial archdiocesan plan to reduce debt. Many parishes faced the same fate.

Saints Cyril and Methodius Church stands silent today. Yet its story echoes. It is a testament to the waves of immigrants who shaped Chicago. Their faith and community left an indelible mark. The church’s closure is a reminder of the changing urban landscape. The building serves as a solemn monument to a vibrant past.
