Saint Vitus Roman Catholic Church complex in Pilsen was more than just a place of worship. Built between 1896 and 1897 it included a church rectory and parish school. It served the community for almost a century. Imagine the countless weddings baptisms and masses held within its walls.

However in 1990 the church closed. The Archdiocese of Chicago sold it. The Resurrection Project a community development corporation bought it for a mere $10. This wasn’t the end for Saint Vitus. Instead it marked a new beginning.

The Resurrection Project saw the potential in this historic building. They understood its importance to the Latino community of Pilsen. A team of architects urban planners and preservationists worked together. They envisioned something new.

After renovations costing $1.2 million for the school and $400000 for the church the complex reopened in 1994. The Guadalupano Family Center now occupies the space. It is a state-of-the-art daycare serving thousands of children. It also houses a cultural center.
