Envision a church so deeply woven into the fabric of Dallas that its story begins at the very heart of the city’s origins. Saint Timothy Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a name that echoes through Dallas’s history, traces its roots back to a simple courthouse meeting in 1867. Thirteen souls, led by Reverend A. J. Haynes, gathered to plant the seed of a new congregation, the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church. This courageous group built their first wooden sanctuary near the Trinity River and Pacific Avenue in 1868. Remarkably, this humble building holds the distinction of being the first Presbyterian church and the second house of worship in Dallas. Saint Timothy Cumberland Presbyterian Church’s journey mirrored the city’s own growth. By 1880, the congregation had moved to a new home on Harwood Street. They later built a striking red brick edifice at the corner of Harwood and Commerce, completed in 1898. It was within these walls that the Cumberland Presbyterian General Assembly met in 1904. This crucial meeting would shape the denomination’s future as the reunion with the Presbyterian Church USA was debated and ultimately approved. Following this pivotal event, the congregation officially joined the Presbyterian Church USA in 1906, changing its name to Central Presbyterian Church. Their story continued with the construction of the City Temple in 1917 at Patterson and Akard Streets. This grand structure, designed to serve both as a place of worship and a community hub, reflected the church’s expanding role in the city’s life.
