What if I told you that the story of Saint Stephen Lutheran Church in Chicago involves not just faith, but also real estate drama? Saint Stephen Lutheran Church has a history more complex than it might seem at first glance. This church’s journey is a testament to the changing landscape of Chicago and the evolving nature of religious communities.
Originally, this building wasn’t Saint Stephen Lutheran Church at all. It started as the Tenth Church of Christ, Scientist. This was back in 1917. The design mirrored The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston. For decades, Christian Scientists gathered here.
Then, sometime in the 1960s, everything changed. A smaller Black congregation purchased the building. They renamed it Saint Stephen’s. This marked a new chapter. The church served its new community for several years.
However, the winds of change continued to blow. In the 1990s, Saint Stephen’s moved on. The building was sold to Konstantinos Antoniou. His vision was to transform the church into a condo complex.
But Antoniou’s plans hit a wall. Protracted battles with the neighborhood stalled the project. The property fell into foreclosure. Heartland Bank and Trust Company took possession.
Today, Saint Stephen Lutheran Church in Chicago exists as a vibrant community, despite its building’s complicated past. Though not located in the historic building, the spirit of faith and community endures. The congregation gathers every Sunday at 10 am for worship. You can even join their services via livestream. Saint Stephen Lutheran Church also offers a range of ministries. There are groups for children, youth, young adults, and seniors. The church actively engages in community outreach.
Interestingly, Saint Stephen Lutheran Church also has a preschool. It provides care and education for young children. This reflects the church’s commitment to serving families. The church council consists of fifteen elected members. They guide the congregation’s work and vision.
So, while the original building has a story of its own, Saint Stephen Lutheran Church continues to thrive. It is a living testament to faith, community, and the enduring spirit of Chicago. It stands as a reminder that even amidst change, faith finds a way to flourish.
