Originating from the name of the first church in the area, have you ever wondered about the story of Saint-Savournin? Its history is etched in stone and whispers through the wind. Let’s step back in time together. This commune east of Marseille, sits at the eastern edge of the Massif de l’Étoile. It lies nestled between Cadolive and Mimet. Saint-Savournin’s story began long ago.

In medieval times, Saint-Savournin was a village sustained by the land. Villagers reared sheep and goats. They cultivated olives. The commune’s name comes from the first church. Writings donated to the Abbey of Saint-Victor in 1010 mention it. At that time, the church was known as Sanctus Saturninus. It was likely built on the ruins of a temple. This temple honored Saturn.

Interestingly, Saint-Saturnin transformed into Saint-Savournin in the 16th century. This change followed the ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts in 1539. That ordinance prescribed writing all official acts in French. The population grew in the 19th century. Italian immigration played a key role. The industrial activity around the mines attracted many. Most of the Italians hailed from Moiola in Piedmont. This bond led to a friendship pact. It was signed between the two villages on April 29, 1979.

Saint-Savournin’s landscape is marked by the Massif de l’Étoile. The Tête du Grand-Puech rises to 778 meters. It stands as the highest point. The village has a rich mining history. Saint-Savournin forms part of the Provence coal basin. Coal mining began as early as the 16th century. It continued until 2003.

The village’s coat of arms features a green tree. Two black “S” letters flank it. The tree symbolizes the commune’s abundant woods. Saint-Savournin sits over 400 meters high. It offers panoramic views. Despite its closeness to Marseille, winters are harsher. This is due to its position against the northern flank of the mountain range. Saint-Savournin has traces of Neolithic settlements. There is also abundant evidence of Gallo-Roman habitation.

Saint-Savournin. A place where ancient history and industrial heritage intertwine. Its story, whispered by the stones, is one of resilience and transformation. As we stand here, we are reminded of the passage of time. The echoes of those who came before us still resonate within these lands.
