A quiet escape from bustling Paris, Saint-Prix is a commune nestled on the southern flank of the vast butte-témoin bearing the forest of Montmorency. This picturesque village, located 15 kilometers north of the City of Lights, offers a tranquil retreat in the heart of the Ile-de-France region.

Saint-Prix derives its name from Saint Praejectus, an Auvergne saint martyred in 676 AD. His relics were entrusted to monks who established a priory here. As pilgrimages to these relics grew in prominence, the village’s name gradually shifted to Saint-Prix, a transformation that officially took place in 1536.

The history of Saint-Prix is interwoven with the forest of Montmorency. The Montmorency family, powerful lords who held sway over the region, established a hunting lodge in the 12th century within the forest. The lodge later transformed into a hunting ground and received a royal visit from Louis XI in 1460.

The village, with its charming old houses and quaint streets, is a treasure trove of historical wonders. The Church of Saint-Prix, originally a Romanesque structure, was rebuilt in the 13th century in the Gothic style. An inscription designates Saint Germain as the parish’s patron saint, though Saint-Prix has come to supplant him in popular memory. The 15th-century witnessed the rise of pilgrimages dedicated to Saint-Prix, causing the church to be rebuilt once more in the 16th century.

The commune’s history is also marked by visits from notable figures. Charles-Philippe Larivièr, a painter, made Saint-Prix his home. The celebrated writer Victor Hugo spent time at the Chateau de la Terrasse in 1840, lending his presence to its storied past.

Today, Saint-Prix, with its charming blend of natural beauty, history, and culture, remains a captivating haven for visitors seeking a respite from the city’s frenetic pace.
