In 1923 a new chapter began. A group split from Saint Phillips Baptist Church. They formed Saint Phillip Missionary Baptist Church. Their first services were held under a brush arbor. Imagine the simple beginnings.
This humble start marked the church’s birth. Reverend Johnnie J Bullock led the small congregation. Four officers supported him. Deacon Collie Sessum Deacon Ed Tripple Sister Shelia Britton and Brother Allen Posley were among them. Early members included Brother Jim Dade Sister Mary Dade and others. Their faith sustained them.
Later services moved to a tent. This was in the Mulberry area near DeWalt Texas. The church’s name changed to New Saint Phillip. Reverend Thomas Robinson took over as pastor. Brother Jimmie Dade a dedicated member sought help. He asked his employer Mr A L Choen a realtor for land. Mr Choen generously donated the land. The church stands there to this day.
Reverend J J Bullock built the first church building. Several pastors followed. Reverend Houston then Reverend C H Jones each served. Reverend R E Edward led for eight years. Reverend D A Goston served for eleven years. These leaders guided the congregation. Their dedication remains a powerful legacy.
Reverend J N Williams arrived from Houston. He led with a progressive vision. He overcame opposition. His leadership marked significant growth. The church flourished under his 33 years of service. He passed away in February 1998.
On April 13 1998 Reverend J DeWitt Clark was elected pastor. He brought a new vision. Membership grew. The church’s name reverted to New St Philip Missionary Baptist Church. He added ministries. He strengthened the church’s connection to the community.
Saint Phillip Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament. It showcases the power of faith. It is a beacon of hope in the community. The church continues to grow and thrive.
