Built in 1991, Saint Peters Catholic Church stands proudly on Ocean View Road. It’s a relatively recent addition to Auckland’s rich tapestry of faith. The story of Saint Peters Catholic Church isn’t one of centuries-old stones and ancient rituals. But it’s a vital part of Onehunga’s spiritual heart. The Catholic presence in Onehunga began much earlier, shortly after the arrival of the Fencibles in 1847. The very first Catholic service was held in the afternoon of November 21st, 1847. A few years later, in 1848, a Catholic cemetery was consecrated at the corner of Church and Galway Streets. The Church of the Assumption later rose on this site. Its construction, started in 1887 by William Kemp, speaks to the growing Catholic community in Onehunga. Designed by Thomas Mahoney, it was completed in 1889. The addition of the spire in 1902/1903 cemented its presence in the skyline, reflecting the importance of Onehunga as Auckland’s second port and the strength of its Catholic population. While Saint Peters Catholic Church isn’t as old as some of its counterparts, its role in the Onehunga community is significant. It stands as a testament to the continued growth and vitality of the Catholic faith in the area. It serves as a spiritual hub. It’s a place where people gather. It’s a place to celebrate faith and community. The Church of the Assumption, with its rich history, continues to serve the Onehunga Catholic Community. It acts as a reminder of the faith’s deep roots in the area. Saint Peters Catholic Church, established over a century later, represents the ongoing story of faith in the area.
