Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church

Did you ever hear of a church built on donated land? Right here, at Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, that’s exactly how the story began. In 1902, a small group of thirteen people, led by Reverend Fred Brown, formed the church. Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church found its home in 1903 thanks to the generosity of Mr. J.R. Abney, who donated the very land we stand on today. In May of that year, the first sermon echoed within the walls of the newly built church, delivered by Reverend M.D. Mobley. “Go Preach My Gospel Said the Lord” was the first song, led by Sister Mattie Clark. A fire, sometime later, tragically destroyed many of Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church’s early records. But the church persevered, rebuilding and continuing its mission. In October 1969, Reverend I.W. Hopkins began his time as pastor. His leadership guided numerous improvements. An education building was added, a piano was acquired, and the sanctuary was rebuilt. New furniture for the pulpit and offering collection graced the space. The Gospel and Shining Glory Choirs were also organized under his guidance. He served until 1999. From 1999 to 2003, Reverend Bobby Derrick led Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church, establishing the Sisterhood and Brotherhood Auxiliary. Reverend Melvin Searles Jr. followed, serving from 2004 to 2009. Then, Reverend Stanley F. Price, installed in 2011, brought renewed energy, even reinstituting weekly Bible study. He and his uncle also built and installed the church’s steeple. Today, Saint Paul Missionary Baptist Church is led by Reverend Jesse Thompson. This church has been shaped by numerous individuals, their contributions weaving a rich tapestry of faith and perseverance. A long line of pastors have served, each adding their own unique contribution. Deacons and trustees, too many to name, have also dedicated themselves to this church.
