“Almost a century of service.” Can you believe that’s the legacy of Saint Oswald’s Anglican Church? It closed its doors permanently due to declining numbers. But its story is far from over.

Saint Oswald’s Anglican Church stood on Campbell Road in Greenlane. It served as a gathering place for worshippers. This was since the original building was constructed in the 1950s.

The church was designed by Richard Toy. He was a renowned Canadian-born New Zealand architect. You can see his celebrated work in churches across Auckland, including the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell.

Saint Oswald’s location was a blessing. It offered excellent access to motorways and public transport. It was close to leading schools.

The main church building was purpose-built around the late 1950s. It featured a corrugated-iron roof and internal exposed timber beams. The smaller church hall had wooden weatherboard walls and timber flooring. It included kitchen and toilet amenities.

Since its beginning, Saint Oswald’s had dedicated church members. They took photos and recorded special services. These records are now in the Auckland Diocesan Archives.

Saint Oswald’s parish assisted local schools. It also provided ministry to residents at Logan Campbell Village. The church offered a space for migrants to practice English. It worked with the Auckland City Mission and the Anglican Trust for Women. These efforts improved lives.

Ruth Dillon, a long-time parishioner, was born in 1952. Her family has a strong history with Saint Oswald’s. She remembers the day the new building opened. She has fond memories of Sunday School.

Ruth was confirmed at Saint Oswald’s. She married there. Her parents’ funerals were held there. The place was a huge part of her life.

Saint Oswald’s felt it could no longer be the church it wanted to be. It wanted to be outward-looking and involved. Mere survival was not an option. It felt its people and resources could be shared elsewhere. This could support new Christian work in Auckland.

Imagine the echoes of hymns. Think of the community gatherings within those walls. Saint Oswald’s Anglican Church may be closed. But its impact on Greenlane and its people remains. The spirit of Saint Oswald’s lives on in the memories and the community work it inspired.
