Gazing upon Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, can you envision the hopes and dreams of those Ukrainian laborers who first conceived this sacred space? In 1905, a small group of Ukrainian laborers, newly arrived in Chicago, dared to dream of a spiritual home. They envisioned a place where their Byzantine-Slavonic traditions could flourish. This dream materialized into Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. The church stands as a testament to their faith and perseverance. Their initial fundraising efforts in 1906 allowed them to purchase a modest church from a Danish Protestant congregation. This was just the beginning. As the Ukrainian community grew, so did their ambition. In 1913, the current site at Oakley Boulevard and Rice Street was purchased. Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, completed in 1915, is a magnificent structure inspired by the iconic Saint Sophia’s Cathedral in Kyiv. The architects, Worthmann & Steinbach, masterfully captured the essence of the Byzantine Revival style. Thirteen domes, symbolizing Christ and the Twelve Apostles, rise towards the heavens. These domes reach a height of 112 feet. The church’s interior is a feast for the eyes. A stunning nine-tiered golden chandelier, crafted in Greece, hangs from the central dome. It illuminates the sanctuary with 480 lights, casting a warm glow on the vibrant mosaics and frescos. These artworks depict scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and various saints. One particular icon, dating back to 1928, escaped renovation during the 1974-1977 restoration. It portrays Christ with his apostles and Mother Mary. This untouched piece serves as a poignant link to the church’s past. Above the main entrance, a mosaic of Our Lady of Pochaiv welcomes worshippers. Above her, an icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the church’s patron saint, keeps watch. Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church became a cathedral in 1961. It now serves as the seat of the Eparchy of Saint Nicholas of Chicago. This eparchy extends from Detroit to Hawaii, encompassing a vast territory. Saint Nicholas Roman Catholic Church continues to be a vibrant center for the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community in Chicago. It stands as a symbol of faith, resilience, and the enduring power of community.
