Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Chicago’s Ukrainian Village stands the magnificent Saint Nicholas Greek Catholic Church. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Ukrainian immigrants who, at the turn of the 20th century, sought to create a spiritual haven in their new homeland. Saint Nicholas Greek Catholic Church’s story begins in 1905. A small group of Ukrainian laborers envisioned a place where their Byzantine-Slavonic traditions could flourish. Their dream took root in 1906. They acquired a modest Danish Lutheran church on Superior and Bishop Streets. This marked the official birth of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Ruthenian Catholic parish. The community thrived under the guidance of Father Nicholas Strutynsky. His leadership, coupled with his wife’s tireless efforts, nurtured the growing Ukrainian community. The parish quickly outgrew its initial home. Dr. Volodymyr Simenovych, a prominent figure in the community, envisioned a grander future. He urged the parish to “move west” and build a “glorious new church.” His vision materialized in 1913. The cornerstone for the new Saint Nicholas Greek Catholic Church was laid on Rice Street, between Oakley and Leavitt. The magnificent Byzantine-Slavonic structure, with its thirteen majestic domes symbolizing Christ and the twelve apostles, was completed in 1915. The first liturgy was celebrated on Christmas Day of that year. Saint Nicholas Greek Catholic Church became more than just a place of worship. It became the heart of Chicago’s Ukrainian Village. A heritage school was established, nurturing generations of Ukrainian-American children. The famed Lysenko Chorus, renowned for its victory in a 1930 choral contest, also called Saint Nicholas home. In 1961, the church achieved a new level of prominence. It was designated as the cathedral for the newly established Ukrainian Catholic eparchy in Chicago. Monsignor Jaroslaw Gabro, a son of the parish, became its first bishop. A renovation in the 1970s restored the cathedral to its original splendor. Saint Nicholas Greek Catholic Church continues to serve as a beacon of faith and cultural preservation for the Ukrainian community in Chicago. It stands as a tribute to the vision and dedication of those who built not just a church, but a legacy.
