Saint Maurice Roman Catholic Church was organized in 1890. For over a century, it served as a spiritual anchor for the community. Imagine families gathering for baptisms and weddings. Picture the solemn masses and the joyful celebrations that filled these walls. Saint Maurice Roman Catholic Church held records of these important life events. Baptisms from 1890 to 1915, marriages from the same period, communions and confirmations from 1894 to 1915, and even deaths from 1891 to 1916 were meticulously documented. These records, preserved on microfilm at the Family History Library, offer a glimpse into the lives touched by Saint Maurice. Some records are even available online. Sadly, the church faced challenges in its later years. A merger with Our Lady of Good Counsel and Sts. Peter and Paul churches under the name Blessed Sacrament occurred in 2005. Eventually, mounting debt, necessary repairs, and dwindling attendance led to a difficult decision. Saint Maurice Roman Catholic Church held its last mass in 2008. The building at 3615 S. Hoyne Avenue stands as a silent testament to the faith and community that once thrived within its walls.
