Founded in 1850 by the Sisters of Mercy, Saint Mary’s College began in Wyndham Street. The Sisters of Mercy were the first religious sisters to arrive in New Zealand. They came from Ireland. In 1861, Saint Mary’s College moved to this site in Ponsonby. From here, Saint Mary’s overlooks the Waitemata Harbour and Auckland city.
Saint Mary’s College has a rich musical heritage dating back to the 1860s. Dame Sister Mary Leo shaped the music program. Under her direction, Saint Mary’s produced internationally renowned singers. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Mina Foley were among them. Today, Saint Mary’s College continues this tradition. Music is compulsory for Years 7 to 9. The school has orchestras and choirs. Saint Mary’s College music groups have performed around the world. In 2005, the Sinfonia played at the Beijing Arts Festival.
Saint Mary’s College offers a wide range of subjects. Year 10 students study core subjects. These include English, Math, Science, and Religious Education. They also choose three option subjects. These can be anything from Art to Business Studies. By Year 12, students are studying English and Religious Education. They also study five other subjects of their choice.
