Remarkable isn’t it? This very spot holds a story spanning centuries. Before you stands Saint Mary-the-Virgin Aldermanbury a church with a history as turbulent as London itself. It first appeared sometime between the late 11th and early 12th centuries a medieval parish church serving a growing community. It weathered the storms of the English Reformation and the Restoration becoming a significant Puritan parish by the 17th century.

Imagine the bustling streets of 17th century London. Saint Mary-the-Virgin Aldermanbury stood proud. Then came the Great Fire of London in 1666. A devastating inferno that consumed much of the city including Saint Mary-the-Virgin. King Charles II commissioned Sir Christopher Wren to rebuild 52 churches. Saint Mary-the-Virgin was one of them.

Wren’s reconstruction using salvaged stones and part of the original foundation was completed in 1677. It served as an active house of worship for another 163 years. But the resilience of Saint Mary-the-Virgin was put to the test again. The Blitz of World War II saw another devastating attack. In December 1940 German incendiary bombs reduced it to ruins leaving only exterior walls columns and a bell tower.

A bold idea emerged. Westminster College wanted to commemorate Winston Churchill’s “Iron Curtain” speech. They had an extraordinary idea. They would relocate and rebuild Saint Mary-the-Virgin in Missouri USA as a memorial. The project faced opposition. Some called it sentimental extravagance. Others deemed it an eyesore. But supporters on both sides of the Atlantic prevailed.

After obtaining necessary permissions and raising $1.5 million the restoration began. Workers carefully labelled and transported over 7000 stones across the Atlantic. The reconstruction was described as the biggest jigsaw puzzle in the history of architecture. It involved meticulous cleaning removal and reassembly of these stones. The exterior was completed in 1966. The interior took another two years. The re-dedication finally took place in 1969.

Saint Mary-the-Virgin Aldermanbury now stands as a testament to its enduring spirit and a unique chapter in architectural history. Its journey from medieval parish church to war-torn ruin to resurrected memorial is truly remarkable. Today it serves as a stunning reminder of resilience faith and the power of international collaboration. A symbol of rebirth it embodies a phoenix risen from the ashes. It’s a place where history comes alive. A place of quiet contemplation and a powerful reminder of the past.
