The majestic Saint Mary Cathedral stands before us a testament to faith and history. This architectural gem in downtown Austin boasts a rich past. Originally a small stone church called St Patrick’s it served the largely Irish Catholic community in the 1850s. As the population grew so did the need for a larger place of worship.

The decision to build a new church led to a compromise between the Irish and German Catholic communities. The new church would honor Mary. In 1872 after Austin became the state capital the cornerstone for Saint Mary’s was laid just a block north of the original St Patrick’s. The construction concluded in 1874 with a formal dedication in 1884.

Designed by Irish-born architect Nicholas J Clayton Saint Mary’s showcases a Victorian design. It was Clayton’s first independent project. The neo-Gothic towers and spires were added in 1907. The original finials were lost possibly due to lightning strikes in the 1950s. The cathedral’s stunning design incorporates natural elements. The columns resemble trees complete with foliage-carved capitals. Vines and leaves are depicted in the murals. Pointed arches and spires evoke mountains. The ceiling and blue dome spangled with stars mirror the heavens. This unique blend of nature and architecture makes Saint Mary’s truly special.

Saint Mary’s Cathedral acquired significant status in 1948. It became the cathedral of the newly formed Diocese of Austin. The church underwent extensive remodeling that year. Many neo-Gothic decorations were removed. Neo-Gothic altars and altar rails were replaced with 20th-century marble. A new baldachino reflecting central Texas with cactus and bluebonnets was installed. Extensive restoration work was completed in 2013. The exterior was cleaned blocks and mortar were replaced. The large rose window on the facade was also restored. This intricate window features a quincunx design symbolizing the four evangelists spreading the Word.

The Cathedral’s bell donated by the Butler family is one of the largest in Texas. Saint Mary’s Cathedral is more than just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant part of Austin’s cultural heritage. It has hosted the Celtic Cultural Center of Texas’ annual Christmas concert for many years. This sold-out event showcases traditional Irish and Scottish music. The Cathedral’s enduring legacy stands as a powerful symbol of faith and community. Saint Mary’s Cathedral continues to serve as a spiritual center and a beautiful landmark in Austin.
