The first service. A simple wooden chapel. That’s how Saint Mark’s Anglican Church in Auckland began its story. It was 1847. Auckland was expanding rapidly. Farming communities needed a place of worship. So Bishop Selwyn established Saint Mark’s. A small prefabricated building stood on the site. It served as a place for worship. It also hosted a school.

Saint Mark’s wasn’t just a church. It was the heart of the community. It wasn’t long before the little chapel became too small. In 1860 a larger church was built. This structure we see today is based on that one. It was made of Kauri wood. It had a shingle roof. Bishop Selwyn consecrated it. Sadly only five people attended due to bad weather.

The church grew. In 1871 transepts were added. More extensions followed. A tower was built in 1883. A parish hall appeared in 1897. The community flourished. A choir formed. A Sunday School started. Services even took place in other areas of Remuera.

Saint Mark’s continued to expand. In 1905 Saint Aidan’s church was built nearby. Later Saint George’s church was established. Saint Mark’s became a city-fringe parish. It served a large area. It still thrives today.

The graveyard is fascinating. The first burial occurred in 1849. The last one in 1963. Many prominent Aucklanders are buried here. Names like James and Isabella Dilworth. Or Alfred Buckland and his wives. In 1968 headstones were moved to an area behind the church. A roll of honour is located within the church.

Saint Mark’s has survived challenges. A fire in 1935 severely damaged the church. However the community rebuilt it. The stained glass windows are especially noteworthy. They were installed over many years. They depict local history and community stories.

Saint Mark’s Anglican Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It’s a place of worship. It’s a place of history. It is an integral part of Auckland’s story. It’s a vibrant and welcoming space. It’s a place you can visit anytime. Take a moment to appreciate its long and rich history.
