In 1945, five families in Mount Prospect were approached by Chicago pastors about starting a mission church. There were already two Lutheran churches in Mount Prospect at the time. However, these churches were German Lutheran churches, part of the Missouri Synod. Many years ago, Lutheran churches were organized along ethnic lines. The new church, Saint Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, was organized in the Scandinavian tradition. Today, ethnicity is no longer a factor in church membership at Saint Mark. Saint Mark is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This denomination interprets Scripture and Lutheran doctrines differently than Missouri Synod churches. Through the years, Saint Mark has thrived, becoming a place “for inspiring worship, meaningful ministry, deepening faith and caring community.”
