A devastating fire in November 1970 could have spelled the end for the Saint Luke’s Missionary Baptist Church. You see this beautiful building before you? It only exists because of that fire. Let me tell you how. The Saint Luke’s Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history, deeply intertwined with the community it serves. It all began on October 15, 1918. Guided by faith, a group under the leadership of Rev. Edward Hubbard gathered to found a new church. Deacon Ned Norman, a man of vision, proposed the name that has resonated through the decades: Saint Luke’s Missionary Baptist Church. They found their first home at 3663 S. Indiana Avenue. However, fate, it seemed, had other plans. The fire in 1970 destroyed their house of worship. Undeterred, the congregation held services at the A.R. Leak Colonial House while searching for a new home. This resilient spirit led them to 7262 S. Coles Ave. The church you see today rose from the ashes of that fire, a testament to the unwavering faith of its congregation.
