The Church of Saint Luke was founded in 1884. The current building was built in 1959. Its five-story cathedral and bell tower mark it as a place of faith. You will find it at the corner of Belmont and Greenview.
Saint Luke Academy was founded in 1882. Assistant Pastor John Mueller from St. James Lutheran Church founded it. The school was originally located at Hoyne and Wellington streets. Its purpose was to open a Christian Day School. It was also meant to gather members for a new congregation in Lakeview. In 1904, Saint Luke Lutheran School moved to Belmont and Perry Street. Perry Street is now Greenview Avenue. From 1961 to 1967, the church was renovated. A new school facade was added at 1500 W. Belmont Avenue.
Music is very important to Saint Luke. The church houses one of the largest organs in Chicago. Many famous organists have played it. Paul Manz, a famous composer and performer, once served as Cantor Emeritus at Saint Luke. The church performed many Bach Cantatas. These drew crowds from surrounding states. Saint Luke was key in bringing the Jazz Nativity to Chicago. It also helped develop the Jazz Passion. The Jazz Passion performed internationally for the Reformation’s 500th anniversary. It performed exclusively at Saint Luke Church.
