Ever wondered how a volcanic crater became a bustling Caribbean capital? That’s Castries. It is the heart of Saint Lucia. I am about to tell you its story.

Castries started as a French settlement in 1650. It was called Carénage. This meant safe anchorage. The name highlighted its deep-water port. In 1756, it was renamed Castries. This honored Charles Eugène Gabriel de La Croix. He was the Marquis de Castries.

The city’s harbor is central to its story. It once was a volcanic crater. The harbor’s western wall collapsed. This flooded the area. It created a natural haven for ships.

Castries has faced many challenges. Major fires struck in 1805, 1813 and 1948. The 1948 fire was especially devastating. A live coal iron left unattended sparked the blaze. Eighty percent of Castries was destroyed. Yet, each time, Castries rose from the ashes.

During World War II, disaster struck again. In 1942, a German U-boat entered Castries harbor. It sank two Allied ships. One was the Canadian ocean liner RMS Lady Nelson.

Castries is not just about its past. It is also the birthplace of two Nobel Prize winners. Sir Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979. Derek Walcott won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992.

Derek Walcott immortalized the 1948 fire in his poem. It was called “A City’s Death by Fire”. This marked the start of his celebrated literary career.

Today, Castries is a vibrant city. It blends French and British architecture. Street names like Jeremie Street and Micoud Street reflect this mix.

Derek Walcott Square is in the city’s heart. It honors the Nobel laureate. The Square features bronze busts of Walcott and Sir Arthur Lewis.

The Castries Central Market is a must-see. It is a lively place. Locals and tourists gather here. It offers fruits, vegetables and crafts.

You can find panoramic views of Castries from Morne Fortune. This overlooks the city. It shows Saint Lucia’s beauty.

Castries is a major tourist destination. Cruise ships often dock here. Duty-free shopping is available at Point Seraphine and La Place Carenage.

Castries connects Saint Lucia to the world. Ferries run to Martinique. Standard bus routes reach all parts of the island.

The city is home to important institutions. The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States has its secretariat here. The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court is also based in Castries.

Castries stands as a testament to resilience. It has risen from fires and war. It is a city of culture and history. It is a safe harbor for ships and dreams.
