Sandstone facades rise before us. These mark the Saint Louis Capuchin Church in downtown Beirut. This cathedral stands as a testament to faith and resilience.

Welcome to the Saint Louis Cathedral of the Capuchin Fathers. It is a Latin Catholic cathedral. It is located north of the Grand Serail. The church is named after King Louis IX of France. He is venerated as a saint.

The Saint Louis Capuchin Church has a rich history. Capuchin missionaries first arrived in Lebanon in 1628. They initially worshipped at the old Saint George Church. This was where today’s Maronite cathedral stands. In 1732, they built their own church. It was near today’s Riadh al-Solh square. This church was also dedicated to King Louis IX.

By 1868, they relocated. The Capuchins moved to Bab Idris. They inaugurated the current cathedral. The Saint Louis Capuchin Church became a central place. It was used for official celebrations during the French Mandate period.

Look around. Notice the rose-colored wooden windows. Consider the towering bell tower. The bell tower was added in 1950. These features make the Saint Louis Capuchin Church recognizable.

In December 1975, the Saint Louis Capuchin Church faced hardship. It was raided during the Lebanese Civil War. Fierce fighting caused severe damage by fire. Despite this, the Saint Louis Capuchin Church was the first landmark rebuilt in Downtown Beirut. It reopened in 2002.

The design incorporates local materials. The unique architecture resulted from this. Edmond Duthoit designed the Saint Louis Capuchin Church. Construction began in 1864. It finished in 1868.

The Saint Louis Capuchin Church has daughter churches. One is in Baabdat. It was established in 1893. Two others are in Beirut. These are Saint-François and Notre-Dame des Anges.
