Standing before Saint Lambert’s Catholic Church, it’s hard to imagine the humble beginnings of this Skokie landmark. Founded in 1951, the parish first found its home in a school building. This building, designed by architects Pirola & Erbach, was completed in 1952. But as the congregation grew, they needed a space of their own, a space that would reflect their faith and their community. In 1960, the church we see today was built, a striking example of Mid-Century Modern architecture. Architect Frank Polito, known for his bold and stylized designs, imbued Saint Lambert’s with a unique flair. He employed a palette of vibrant colors and geometric shapes, creating a space that is both beautiful and inspiring. The sanctuary, flooded with natural light, features arched wood laminate beams and diamond-shaped windows showcasing faceted stained glass. These elements are a testament to Polito’s commitment to modern aesthetics and his ability to seamlessly integrate faith and design. Saint Lambert’s became the heart of its community, welcoming people from all walks of life, including a large Filipino presence that has enriched the parish life. Today, as you walk through its grand doors and gaze upon the intricate stained glass and the towering beams, you can feel the decades of devotion that have shaped this place, a sanctuary of faith and a testament to the enduring power of community.
