“Originally a family home.” That’s how Saint Kentigern Boys’ School started its journey. Let’s explore the history and heritage of this school.
Saint Kentigern Boys’ School has a rich past. It began in 1879 as the Wilson family’s residence. The Wilson family was part of the Wilson and Horton publishing empire. John Martyn Wilson inherited the house. He then bequeathed it to the Saint Kentigern Trust. His intention was for it to be used solely to educate boys.
The Saint Kentigern Trust was founded in 1949. Its mission was to establish schools for boys in Auckland Province. Saint Kentigern College opened in Pakuranga in 1953. It provided education for boys from Year 7 to Year 13. Saint Kentigern School opened in Remuera in 1959. It offered education for boys from New Entrants to Year 8. This is now Saint Kentigern Boys’ School.
Mr Jack Chalmers was the inaugural Headmaster. He welcomed 200 boys and 12 teachers. Mr Chalmers led the school for twenty years. He emphasized a close relationship with parents. This remains a central feature of Saint Kentigern today.
Mr Brian Irwin became principal in 1979. During his time, the school grew. The roll increased from 330 to 485 students. Notable buildings were added. These include the J C Chalmers Hall and the Malcolm Bracegirdle School of Music. Also the Brian Irwin Junior School was built. Mr Irwin retired after fifteen years in 1993.
Mr Geoff Burgess became the third Principal in 1994. He assisted with the design of the Warwick Macky Senior School block. The building was completed in 1996. Mr Burgess maintained the strong sense of family. He also developed specialist programmes. He promoted the Arts Festival and began Celtic Day. His lasting legacy is “The Saint Kentigern Way”. This values system promotes care and respect.
Mr Peter Cassie followed Mr Burgess as Principal in 2012. The Trust Deed changed in 2003. It allowed girls to be educated at the College. This led to the merger with Corran School in 2009. Saint Kentigern School for Girls-Corran opened in 2010.
Saint Kentigern School for Girls-Corran was renamed Saint Kentigern Girls’ School. Saint Kentigern School was renamed Saint Kentigern Boys’ School.
In 2023, Saint Kentigern Boys’ School celebrated its 64th anniversary. The school held its first Founders Day Service. This acknowledged the school’s beginnings. It shared key milestones and stories with the boys.
Martyn Wilson gifted land to the Auckland City Council. This became Martyn Wilson Field. The Boys’ School uses it for sports activities during the school week.
Understanding the school’s history enhances students’ sense of belonging. It encourages them to appreciate traditions and values. It connects them to past students and staff.
Saint Kentigern Boys’ School parents played a role in building a swimming pool. They pledged funds at a school meeting.
