What if I told you Saint Joseph’s Catholic School’s story began with fear? Fear of attacks, fear of the unknown, fear that shaped a community and birthed this very school. Right here, at 125 Church Street in Onehunga, Auckland, stands Saint Joseph’s Catholic School. Its history is intertwined with the “Fencible Settlement” of British soldiers and their families. The British government, fearing Maori attacks on European settlers in Auckland, relocated soldiers here. These “Fencibles,” named after their defensive role, were given land and cottages. Initially, St Mary’s Church served as a classroom. However, in 1858, Father Paul requested Sisters of Mercy from Mother Cecilia Maher to establish a convent and take over the children’s education. In 1864, the Sisters arrived, converting a cottage into makeshift classrooms. As the community grew, so did the need for proper schooling. A new convent with classrooms was built, but it soon proved insufficient. In 1882, a dedicated classroom block was constructed, officially marking the birth of Saint Joseph’s Catholic School. The school, initially serving the children of the Fencible Settlement, continued to evolve, eventually catering to girls from Years 1 to 8 and boys from Years 1 to 6. Today, Saint Joseph’s Catholic School carries the legacy of the Fencibles, a testament to their resilience and the community’s dedication to education. The school’s motto, “To love and to serve,” reflects the enduring Mercy values. These values resonate within the walls of Saint Joseph’s Catholic School, shaping generations of students.
