Whispers of faith echo through time. This is Saint Joseph & Saint Anne Catholic Church. Right here on this very spot a vibrant community blossomed. Founded in 1889 it served as a beacon for French-speaking Canadians. They built their temple to honor Saint Joseph. Their devotion shaped this place.
Archbishop Patrick Feehan blessed the first stone in 1891. The church took on a beautiful French Provincial Gothic style. It stands as a testament to the faith and craftsmanship of those early settlers. Imagine the sounds of hammers and the songs of hope as this church arose.
The Sisters of St Joseph of Concordia Kansas opened a school in 1891. Two hundred children found learning and faith here. The bells purchased and consecrated in 1895 filled the air with their joyful sound. Their rich tones echoed the community’s deep faith. The stained glass windows by Shroeders Lascelles a renowned company also designed the windows of Chicago’s Cathedral and Notre Dame church.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1900. Father Cyril Poissant installed as pastor brought a relic of Saint Anne. This marked the beginning of the first Saint Anne novena. It became a yearly tradition drawing many pilgrims. They came seeking blessings and solace.
The church continued to grow. It underwent several renovations and expansions. It faced adversity too. Fires in 1950 and 1966 tested the community’s faith. Yet they rebuilt stronger each time. The devotion to Saint Anne endured. Roller skating parties and June carnivals filled the church halls with laughter and life.
The Saint Joseph & Saint Anne Catholic Church continued its ministry for over a century. It served as a spiritual home to generations of Chicagoans. In 1991 it merged with St Agnes Church. It became Our Lady of Fatima Shrine of St Anne. Its legacy however remains woven into the fabric of this neighborhood’s history. The spirit of Saint Joseph and Saint Anne continues to inspire hope and faith. As we stand here today let us remember their unwavering devotion.
